Jesus Is With Us Through Our Calling

Focus verse: “Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?” John 9:35

God had placed something on my heart. I wrestled with this calling because it was out of my comfort zone. I wanted to be obedient, but at the same time I didn’t think I was qualified. I gave myself multiple reasons to not commit to this calling, but none stood up to the yearning in my heart. I finally realized that I had to do what God was calling me to do.

I began the process and followed where God was leading me. Everything was running as planned and then I hit a wall. It was almost as if the project stopped right in its tracks. Everything became difficult and I lost confidence in what I was doing. I lost sight of the goal.

In John 9, there is a blind man who was believed to be blind because of a sin that was committed by himself or his parents. Jesus cleared that up immediately and said that the man was blind so that the works of God might be displayed in him. Jesus had a calling on this man’s life and the man did not even realize it.

Jesus spit on the ground, made some mud, and put it on the man’s eyes. He told the man to go wash in the Pool of Siloam and the man went home able to see. It was a true miracle. Some recognized the poor blind man and others thought it was another man who happened to look like him. Those who recognized him asked how he came to see. He told them what happened and that the man they call Jesus healed him.

This man’s calling is so far going easy. The man is extremely happy and everyone else is astonished at the miracle that happened. But trouble was sure to come. The Pharisees began to question the man. They told him that if he acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, he would be kicked out of the synagogue. You see this man was a Jew. Jew’s lives revolved around their religious beliefs and practices. Those who did not abide by these practices and beliefs would be kicked out of the synagogue which meant their families would disown them, their friends would no longer accept them, and they were kicked out of the only place they had to worship God and hear the Bible teachings. Everything this man knew and the life he knew would be changed drastically.

He had a calling, a great calling, of confessing Jesus as his Lord and Savior but he would have to die to the man he once knew to be obedient to this calling. He risked it all. He told the Pharisees, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” He acknowledged that Jesus healed him. He said, “If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” Right there, he acknowledged Jesus was no ordinary man, He was from God.

The man was immediately kicked out of the life he knew. I’m sure he felt lonely, confused, and rejected. What would he do now?

Jesus came to the rescue. Verse 35 says, “Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?” The words “when he found him” stuck out to me. Jesus knew what had happened to the man. He knew he was alone, afraid, and confused. He sought the man out to comfort him and reassure him that he did the right thing.

Jesus did not call this man and then desert him, He was with him the whole time. The calling was not easy, but Jesus led him, reassured him, and never left him. Our calling will not always be easy, but Jesus is seeking us out to help us through the entirety of it. Whenever we feel lonely and feel like giving up, look to Jesus, he is always right there with us.
