Names of Jesus - Part 3 - Word of God

“He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is the Word of God.”

Revelation 19:13

My parents taught me at a young age that the Bible and quoting Scripture were very powerful tools. But, as a young Christian I did not fully understand what made Scripture so powerful. I saw the Bible as a collection of books that different men wrote, that were later combined into one big book. I thought that the authors of these books were followers of God and that God gave them the ideas to put in their books. That is partly true, but my thoughts did not go into the full depth of what the Word of God truly is until I became a more mature Christian and started looking into the full meaning of the Bible.

We’re going to look at two books of the Bible that John, the apostle, wrote. He says in John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Here we have an author of one of the books of the Bible that is completely giving the credit of his words to God. John is quoting the very beginning of God’s Word in Genesis 1. This is a man that fully grasps the truth that Jesus was with God from the beginning. John begins his New Testament book, a book that is about Jesus’ life, with understanding that Jesus was there from the beginning.

John also writes the very last book of the Bible, Revelation. He says in Revelation 1:1-2, “The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his slaves the things which must take place in a short time, and communicated it by sending it through his angel to his slave John, who testified about the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ, all that he saw.” Again, John is identifying himself as the author, but he highlights the one who receives the glory and dominion — Jesus Christ. John starts by using the word “revelation”. This word may be understood as being “of” Jesus or “from” Jesus, showing us that Jesus is not only the content of the revelation but He is also the revealer of the hidden realities being disclosed in this book. The word “slave” in these verses shows that Jesus communicates to His servants, those who are totally committed and devoted to Him, through His Word. The Word of God is a way for Jesus to talk to us and a part of the glue that holds our relationship together.

“And He was dressed in an outer garment dipped in blood, and His name is called the Word of God.” Revelation 19:13

There is no doubt that John is revealing Jesus as the rider on the white horse in Revelation 19:13. Jesus reveals Himself, the one that came as the final sacrifice for our salvation, as the true judge and warrior that comes back to begin the war with His enemies and defeats them. By Jesus being called “The Word of God” is emphasizing His status as the ultimate revelation of God’s character.

Jesus is “Faithful” and “True”. We can believe without a doubt that the Bible was not just a bunch of books that were written by men of God. The Bible is a collection of revelations that were given directly to men from God. The words we read out of this very powerful book called the Bible are the very thoughts of Jesus, the revealer of all things.

Does this bring tears to anyone else’s eyes? When you feel distant from Jesus and you just need to sit in His presence and feel His arms wrapped around you, sit down with His Word. God’s Word, along with prayer, are our direct communication lines with Him. Knowing that I have His Word as a tool to use as my comfort and my weapon gives me a feeling of confidence as I step out into this world. God never intended for us to go about this world alone, He will always provide ways for us to hear Him talking to us.
