How To Make Time For God When You're Busy
Adding new things to your schedule is not easy when your schedule is already full to the brim. It takes dedication and commitment to add something new, but some things are worth it.
As we transition into the fall season, it is time to add back in all the things we put off in the summer. Maybe while your kids were at home you didn’t have as much time for exercise, time to watch your favorite television shows, time to catch up on your errands, or time to spend with God and study His Word. As I look at that list and think about any other activities in my life that were neglected this summer because of time, I can see one that has to be put back into my daily routine. I must make time for my relationship with Jesus.
When we add something to our already busy schedule, it has to be something that either brings us great joy or that is crucial to be fit in. Making time for Jesus is both of those.
When we delight in something or someone, we experience great pleasure or joy when we do it or are around it. To delight in someone, we must know them well. So, when we delight in the Lord, we must know Him on a personal level. As we grow to know the Lord, we will experience delight in Him even more.
To add something into our day takes a lot of commitment on our part as well. To commit ourselves means to entrust everything to that thing or person. When we commit ourselves to Jesus, we are entrusting everything to Him—our lives, families, job, possessions, schedules, and every second of our day—to His control and guidance. When we feel we don’t have time to add Him in, He will give us time. We first commit to Him, pray that He will make a way, and then watch Him control our schedules so that free time is available for Him.
It is crucial in our lives that we trust in the Lord to provide in ways we are inadequate.
Where is God asking you to trust Him so that you can add Him into your daily routine? Is God leading you to make the commitment to join a Bible study group this fall? Is God asking you to simply add prayer time each morning? Is God asking you to read a 5-minute devotional book each day? All our schedules and walks with God look different, but we can make time for Him in some form.
As the fall begins, ask God how you can make time for Him. Commit to what He is leading you to do and delight in your time with Him. Through your time with God, He will fill your heart with so much joy, peace, wisdom, and guidance that you will never want to go through your day without spending time with God.
Verses to encourage your time and study with God:
“Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humble yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words.” Daniel 10:12
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
“Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” Proverbs 30:5
“Whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” 1 John 2:3-6
Dear Lord,
I come to you with a full schedule, but I desire to spend time with you. I trust that you are guiding me each day and know what is best for me. With that, I give my schedule over to you so that you may make time in it so I can strengthen my relationship with you through prayer, study, and quiet time. Show me what is best for our relationship and help me to commit to it and to you. I know that as I grow closer to you, you will delight my heart. Thank you for your Word and for never giving up on me.
Amen
